Maritimo Streaks to Win; Eighth Win of Series Seals the Mark Lee Trophy Victory

AN ELECTRICAL issue handed Maritimo's Supercat Extreme vessel a Mark Lee Trophy-winning victory in the final race of the Offshore Superboat Championships.

The team's Supercat 1000 was torn to shreds after a crash in August's second round in Mackay, but no Supercat Extreme rival could stop the team of Ross Willaton and Travis Thompson across the series.

Theywon eight of the 10 races, but still faced stiff competition from Darren Nicholson and Peter McGrath's 222 Offshore Racing team.

Nicholson and McGrath won Hervey Bay's first race on Sunday morning, but an electrical fault robbed the team of an opportunity to contest the final race.

Maritimo and 222 Offshore were split by just seven points after the first race.

Race director Russell Embleton said it was the biggest incident from a round raced in near-perfect offshore racing conditions.

"It happens, and it probably cost them a chance at the championship," Embleton said. …
