AITOR Karanka is confident Fabio da Silva will be an outstanding deputy for George Friend.

Middlesbrough's first choice left-back will be sidelined for two to three weeks after suffering an injured knee on the Rockliffe Park training ground last week.

Friend attended Sunday's home clash with Chelsea wearing a knee brace and he would have seen first hand Fabio's first Premier League start of the season.

Asked how he thought the Brazilian coped on the day, Karanka said: "Fabio did really well. I am really pleased because he is one of those players that nobody pays attention to but he is training really well.

"He has been waiting for his chance and I was really pleased with his performance," he said.

"I have been pleased with his attitude on the training ground and in the game because it is not easy to replace George Friend."

Fabio made a brief appearance in the Capital One Cup tie at Fulham, playing the first 10 minutes before suffering an injury and, ironically, being replaced by Friend, who also had to be subbed in stoppage time when he was subsequently injured. …
