A MAN who allegedly spent 14 hours in negotiation with police while on a Gympie rooftop on Saturday night was remanded in custody to Gympie Magistrates Court yesterday.

The 32 year-old Gympie man, who was wanted on a return to prison warrant, was arrested when he surrendered voluntarily and peacefully to police at 6.45am Sunday, and was taken to the Gympie watch house.

He was charged with two counts of trespass, unregulated high risk activity, obstructing police and wilful damage, all allegedly committed overnight on Saturday.

Two damage charges allege damaging two roof-top whirly bird ventilation devices.

The man was not charged with any drug offences, but police claimed on Sunday he had admitted to emergency services he was under the influence of amphetamines.

Gympie police Senior Constable Jon Roche said the man was first reported to police Saturday afternoon for allegedly running through the yards of houses in the normally quiet Mt Pleasant neighbourhood and then climbing on a roof. …
