THE success of three national events staged at South Shields Sailing Club could see them return to the venue in the future.

The National Scout Sailing Regatta, the Phantom Class National Championships and the UK Laser European Qualifiers were all hosted by the South Tyneside club within the space of a few weeks in August and September.

The National Regatta consisted of four races attended by more than 100 competitors.

The National Phantom Championship featured nearly 50 boats in a packed programme of five races over three days - and was hailed a big success.

Nigel Denchfield, Royal Yachting Asociation Race Officer for the Championships: "I cannot sing the praises of the club and its team sufficiently.

"The whole event was superbly organised and all the volunteers were so cheerful, welcoming and willing to help."

Just two weeks after the Phantoms, South Shields hosted the UK Laser European Qualifiers.

The entry list of 120 boats included Olympic sailor Ali Young, who earlier this year became the Laser Radial world champion in Mexico. …
