Ritchie Is Happy to Be in Pole Position

MATT Ritchie insists Newcastle United are "where they want to be" in the Championship table - but is refusing to identify who the Magpies' rivals for promotion will be yet.

League leaders Newcastle are two points clear of Brighton and Hove Albion in second and six ahead of third-placed Reading.

However, ahead of a difficult trip to the City Ground to take on Nottingham Forest this evening, Ritchie believes the table is far too tightly bunched together at the moment for the top few teams to be identified as the likely promotion contenders just at this stage of the season.

"I wouldn't call anyone rivals at the minute," the 27-year-old said. "The league is so tight you can win two or three on the bounce and then your rivals are different.

"We are where we want to be at the top of the league and we need to make sure our performances are good.

"Everyone beats everyone. That's why it is such a good league to watch and be involved in.
