Cut-Price Private Divorce Service 'To Avoid Spiralling Costs in Courts'

A LEADING law firm is launching a cutprice private divorce service so that couples can be spared delays and spiralling costs in the public courts.

Nearly three-quarters of Londoners complain about delays while finalising their divorces in the Family Courts, while 77 per cent say they want a swift resolution rather than a protracted legal battle, according to new figures.

Analysis shows divorce in London costs an average of PS134,525, compared with PS70,000 in the rest of the UK.

West End law firm Seddons is offering a new fixed-fee private system for divorces, so couples can avoid going through the public courts.

"One of the most popular questions at the start of a divorce is how much this is going to cost and we have to say we don't know", said Seddons partner Toby Hales. "What we are offering is a private courts system. We are saying the state system is far too slow, too expensive and a bit rubbish so here's a private scheme that's better. …
