Levellers Bring a Party Atmosphere to Academy

The Levellers - Levelling The Land 25th Anniversary Tour, Newcastle O2 Academy Twenty five years ago the Levellers were regularly to be found playing the fondly remembered Riverside on Newcastle's Melbourne Street.

Levelling the Land is their second album and the one that took them from cult to festival headliners.

I entered the packed Academy just as support band Ferocious Dog started their set. They're a punky folk-roots band, similar in many ways to the Levellers, with a fiddler taking the lead on many songs.

They have played Newcastle's Cluny many times and clearly now have a following on Tyneside. My guess, after this performance, is that next time they're in town you'll have to be quick to get a ticket.

After a short video charting 25 years of political events, The Levellers arrived and opened with One Way before proceeding through Levelling the Land.

The line-up has been the same since the early 1990s.

When I first saw them they had youthful optimism coupled with a passion for civil liberties and a more equitable world. …
