Avoiding Threat of 'Monster Journey'

DECEMBER, January and February. David Moyes has winter in mind.

It will, you sense, be critical for Sunderland.

The Scot says his players cannot wait two months to start their season - behind schedule, they must fight now.

To be fair, there have been glimpses of improvement all along, and in the last few weeks especially. Some momentum, too.

Now, he says, he is beginning to feel at home.

Now, firstly, in December, the Black Cats must give themselves a chance, a hope. An opportunity to both attract saviours in between, in January, when the club are, due to their still precarious position at the bottom of the Premier League, planning based on a number of "scenarios", and a lifeline to save themselves, whatsoever the transfer window brings.

A "monster of a journey" simply must, Moyes says, be cut down to manageable size "We must be in the game come January," he said. "A couple of wins in the bag would make things look completely different. …
