Tobruk Preparation Could Bring $4M to Our Port

WE'VE won the battle to have the HMAS Tobruk sunk in waters off Bundaberg.

The next goal is to secure pre-scuttling work done here which would bring millions of dollars - and plenty of jobs - to the region.

Bundaberg Mayor Jack Dempsey congratulated Keith Pitt "for the tenacity he has shown in his belief that this ship rightly belonged in local waters".

"To have this announcement that the HMAS Tobruk is coming to the Bundaberg and Fraser Coast regions is yet another momentum builder that will result in jobs and growth in visitor numbers across the regions," Cr Dempsey said.

"With the announced arrival of this vessel it now becomes a task for council to engage with the federal and Queensland governments and Gladstone Ports Corporation to arrange for HMAS Tobruk to undergo pre-scuttling work at our local port."

Turning an operational navy ship into an empty shell for divers to glide through is a mammoth process, one that could bring up to $4 million in work to the Bundaberg Port. …
