AQUARTET of North East restaurants have been listed as being among the best in the UK by online international reservations portal, OpenTable.

The popular website, which uses verified diner reviews to rank thousands of restaurants across the UK, has named its top 100 for 2016 - and exactly four percent of them can be found in Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland.

And if that doesn't sound a whole lot, allow me to put into context. Ninety percent of the 100 restaurants are in London, with the award-winning The Ledbury retaining top spot and other London favourites such as Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, Typing Room and Restaurant Gordon Ramsay also featuring in the top 10.

By our reckoning, this means the North East is lucky enough to have 40% of the best UK eateries outside the capital. Suddenly sounds a lot more like something you can boast about now, doesn't it? Now to the important bit for North East foodies; which of our region's restaurants made the cut? Peace and Loaf in Newcastle; Hinnies in Whitley Bay; 21 in Newcastle; and Bouchon Bistrot in Hexham have all been given the nod in the list which has been compiled from more than 465,000 verified OpenTable diner reviews from across more than 5,600 restaurants the UK over the past 12 months.

Head chef and Peace and Loaf, Dave Coulson, said: "We're massively proud of being listed by OpenTable; it's great to see all the hard work of all the staff at Peace and Loaf paying off.

"The North East has a great restaurant scene, and it's about time it got proper recognition, and to be one of the places leading the charge, it just leaves us with an enormous sense of pride."

Chef and restaurateur Terry Laybourne said he and the team at 21 were also very happy.
