STRONG winds are set to hit the North East later this week - which could cause major problems for people trying to get away over Christmas.

Forecasters have said gusts of up to 48mph could hit some parts of the region on Friday and Christmas Eve as people take to the roads to visit loved ones for the festive weekend.

The wet and windy weather is due to arrive tonight, affecting the whole of the UK.

A Met Office forecaster said: "The UK will see a change in conditions from Tuesday onwards as a high pressure system over eastern Europe that's been shielding us moves away.

"On Tuesday we're expecting the first frontal system to make its way across the North West - it will probably come across Newcastle in the early hours of Wednesday morning, or Tuesday night.

"This will bring rainfall with it, and breezier conditions."

Conditions will be windy throughout the day tomorrow, with the potential for showers which could be heavy at times. …
