WHILE most of us will be wrapped up warm on Christmas night, a senior councillor will spending the night on the streets to support good causes.

Barry Hunt, Mayor of Redcar and Cleveland, is taking on his biggest "sleep-out" challenge by spending both Christmas Eve night and Christmas Day night on the street at Redcar.

The 68-year-old former manager of nightclubs and pubs, has done this in previous years, but always with friends.

"This time I'm doing it alone. I have to see it through," he said "Every year I do this challenge in January always with others.

"This time I'm happy for wellwishers to drop by to say hello, but I want to do it alone. I want to raise the profile of how lonely it is to sleep out and be homeless."

The mayor's two charities are Saltburn-based Earthbeat, which runs the former primary school community centre at Marske Mill Lane, Saltburn, and Coatham House, which helps disadvantaged young people particularly with safe housing, from its base in Queen Street, Redcar. …
