Twitching Tales to Help Life-Saving Unit

A KEEN birdwatcher has published his memoirs to help the heart unit which twice saved his life.

Almost 27 years ago, Keith Robson was resuscitated at South Cleveland Hospital - now James Cook - after suffering a heart attack.

The Linthorpe accountant later became treasurer of the hospital's heart fund which raises funds for vital services and equipment not provided by the NHS.

Last summer, staff at the cardiothoracic unit at James Cook University Hospital again saved Mr Robson's life after her was suffering from arrythmia which can bring on a heart attack.

It was during his stay at the hospital that he decided to put together his birdwatching letters and memoirs for a book, with all proceeds going to the unit. "Sleep was very difficult, and as I lay in the middle of the night, trying to think of matters other than my predicament, I hit upon the idea of having my collected articles published," he said.

"I thought about two chapters and wrote them in my head, and when I got home I went to my computer and got started."

Birdwatching Saltholme " Mr Robson paid for the book, entitled A Twitcher Is Born, to be published himself. It contains tales of his twitching exploits at locations from Saltholme on the Seaton Carew Road to the Sea of Galilee in Israel.

The 72-year-old is married to Chris and they have two sons and two daughters and nine grandchildren.

It was his son James who first inspired him to take up birdwatching as a hobby.

"For our summer holiday in 1987, my wife and I towed our caravan and our four children to the Adriatic coast of Italy," he said.

"As we drove south along the Rhine Valley, James suddenly announced that he was spotting birds of prey which were rising up out of the forests lining the autobahn. …
