It Is Just Plain Sailing for Our Young Talent! SAILING 2016 REVIEW

FROM zippy windsurfers to powerful offshore yachts, the RYA (Royal Yachting Association) North East Region enjoyed successes across the spectrum in 2016.

Sailing has been dropped as a sport for the 2020 Paralympics but that has not deterred 16-year-old Adam Billany from Derwent Reservoir Sailing Club.

Despite suffering from cerebral palsy and having to endure painful operations to straighten and strengthen his legs Billany, from Newton Aycliffe, got 2016 off to a good start when he was presented with the Trident RYA North East Young Sailor of the Year Award.

Successes on the youth dinghy scene in 2016 brought back familiar names as our top young sailors competed against the best of the UK for selection into the RYA zone and youth squads.

Oscar Shilling. 13, had a great year in his Optimist dinghy, winning the RYA North East Junior Championship and coming fourth in the RYA Zone Championships in September.

Shilling, who hails from Newcastle and is a member of Derwent Reservoir Sailing Club, has also been awarded a new dinghy by the John Merricks Sailing Trust (JMST).

He was one of 15 recipients this year out of a total of 80 applicants.

Peter Owen from Consett made it a trio of successful young sailors from DRSC in 2016, reinforcing the fact for many years the club has nurtured the best of our regional young sailors.

This year, 15-year-old Owen celebrated a hat-trick of trophies - the Honda RYA North East Youth RIB Championship, the RYA North East Youth Travellers Series in July and the RYA North East Youth Championship in October.

DRSC, however, is not the only active club in the North East.

Successful regattas were held across our region, from Berwick in the north to Scaling Dam in the south.

South Shields Sailing Club had a busy end of season, hosting three major events one after the other. …
