A TYNESIDE company has received a blinding order which will see it work on the largest container ship ever built.

Solar Solve Marine, which makes window shades for large ships, has been asked to provide 69 separate blinds for the Madrid Maersk, a container vessel being built in South Korea that is expected to be the first ever to pass the 20,000 tue barrier - the unit used to measure container ships.

The ship's massive size means that its bridge is fitted with 69 individual windows that cover the width of the vessel and ensure it is berthed safely when it arrives in ports.

South Shields' Solar Solve, which has more than 40 years of experience in the field, is working with its Korean distributors to provide sunscreens for each window.

Company chairman John Lightfoot, who invented the Solar Solve product, said: "They have been tried and tested and proven to work effectively and efficiently for more than a quarter of a century and are accepted within the marine industry as the brand leader in their field. …
