FABIO da Silva believes Aitor Karanka's football philosophy is similar to Sir Alex Ferguson's.

The Brazilian played for Sir Alex at Manchester United so has intimate knowledge of his approach to training and matches.

And he can see parallels between Fergie's tactical approach and his current head coach Aitor Karanka. "I think they are quite similar because Sir Alex believes in a good defence and going forward from there and I think Karanka has that mentality as well," said Fabio.

"I think in football it's vital not to concede because you will then get something (from the game).

"United built everything on a sound defence, I think that's the clever thing to do, start at the back and go forward from there."

Fabio moved to England almost exactly 10 years ago as a talented and highly-rated Brazilian teenager, signing for Sir Alex's all-conquering Manchester United.

Now an experienced 26-year-old, he is enjoying his run in the first team after moving to Boro from Cardiff in August.

He's started eight out of the last nine Premier League matches at leftback due, in the main, to George Friend's knee injury, and, with Antonio Barragan suffering a hamstring strain in the draw with Leicester, now has a chance to make the right-back slot his own.

He certainly impressed against the Foxes after swapping flanks in the 24th minute when sub Friend replaced the injured Barragan.

"I am really enjoying playing," he said. "The team and the manager are giving me confidence and if he picks me I am going to give 100% every game."

He helped Boro keep a vital clean sheet against the champions and recognises how important a solid defence will be in the coming weeks.

"Yes, that's the basic thing, you have to very solid in this league and get clean sheets like we have - the goals are going to come," Fabio added. …
