Sadness at Passing of a 'Pitman Politician'

TRIBUTES have been paid to the former County Durham MP John Cummings, who has died aged 73.

Mr Cummings had been diagnosed with lung cancer and passed away in St Margaret's Care Home in Durham on Wednesday evening, his family confirmed.

A former miner, he was the Labour MP for Easington from 1987 to 2010.

His former colleague, the current Easington MP Grahame Morris, said: "John was a proud man with a lot of affection for the mining community.

"He represented their dogged determination in both local Government and in Parliament. "John was old school, kind and generous and a very good friend to me as well as a mentor.

"He will be sadly missed by all those who knew him, especially in the mining community and the Labour movement."

Mr Cummings' interest in politics started from an early age when he become a young socialist.

While working as an electrician at Murton Colliery, he was branch secretary of Murton Mechanics and part of the Durham Colliery Mechanics Association. …
