Author Works with Pupils to Boost Reading for Pleasure

PUPILS of Newcastle School for Boys have recently turned editor, helping children's author and their parton of reading, Tom Palmer, finalise his newest novel.

The school and its boys recently celebrated the launch of their involvement in the national patron of reading scheme with a visit from Tom.

Tom spent the day with boys at the school hosting literary discussions, joining their assemblies and even getting involved with rugby training.

During their discussions, Tom told the boys about his latest book and the issues he was having with some aspects of the story and its characters. The boys were quick to offer their assistance which Tom took full advantage of. Boys in Years 3 to 6 were sent the manuscript, read and discussed in class and put together their feedback to present to Tom.

This was then taken and incorporated into the final version of the story ahead of its release to the general public.

The patron of reading scheme is a national project designed to support schools as they look to develop a love of reading for pleasure in their pupils.

The Gosforth-based school got on board with the scheme at the start of this academic year, inviting Tom to be their patron after he attended the first Gosforth community book festival organised by the school last year.

"We were delighted when Tom agreed to be our patron of reading," said headmaster David Tickner.

"Reading for pleasure enriches children's and adults' lives enormously fuelling their knowledge, understanding and imaginations. There is also clear evidence that children who read for pleasure do better academically.

"Research shows that boys don't always engage in reading as readily as many girls. As a boys' school we are uniquely placed to tackle this. Working with authors like Tom is one or our strategies to engage our boys in a lifelong love of reading for pleasure. …
