NEW restaurants and bars could be built inside shipping units located in the heart of Middlesbrough.

Middlesbrough Council is considering replicating the successful Boxparks project, which originated in London's trendy Shoreditch area, as part of the media village plans.

Boxparks opened in 2011 and was dubbed the "world's first pop-up mall", offering drink, food and fashion inside the shipping containers.

Now the Teesside authority has confirmed the idea is "being looked at" as a possibility for the multi-million pound media village plans. It's understood the council has been wowed by the "ethos" of the Boxparks, which last year expanded to Croydon, and sees it as a good fit for the changes taking place in Middlesbrough's centre - especially in Baker and Bedford centre. A report last year stated shops would offer no "added value".

The village would be based on the site of the current bus station, and is seen as the jewel in an ambitious PS68m development that could create around 5,000 jobs while drumming up millions in investment. …
