Jacksonville Delivers amid Giving Season

This is the time of year that brings goodness out of people and showers it on those around them. Looking past the extensively decorated trees, colorfully wrapped presents and jolly Santa "elves," there are people and organizations that think of others.

Some of that goodness presented itself after restoration of the Memorial Park Center oval green was completed. Chuck Chaon, Jayson Smith and Matthew Bratcher, representatives of J.B. Coxwell Contracting, presented the Memorial Park Association with $30,000.

The contractors installed a new irrigation system, improved drainage and amended the soil. They planned to donate back a percentage of their $283,000 fee after coming in under budget.

"This is the largest corporate or individual gift made to Memorial Park Association since its founding 30 years ago," said Agnes Danciger, MPA's board president. "We are extremely grateful as it will help fund additional needs as outlined in The Master Plan which was adopted in 2012 to restore the park."

After the grass has taken root, the fencing around the oval green is scheduled to be removed.

Here are some other examples of that Christmas cheer:

- The Salvation Army is serving a free Christmas meal on Sunday to anyone who may not have the budget for a nice dinner. The meal is open to the community and attendees can arrive and be served between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. They can go a little early and also attend the church service. The event is at the Towers Center of Hope at 900 W. Adams St., in downtown Jacksonville.

- Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Allen Robinson held his second annual Operation Elf for at-risk youth in Jacksonville on Tuesday. Robinson's Within Reach Foundation allowed 30 pre-selected area kids from the Boys and Girls Club of Northeast Florida to go to Academy Sports + Outdoors on the Southside to select a new bicycle. …
