AHEARTBROKEN mum has opened up about the devastation a vicious attack on her son has caused her family.

Calvin McLellan, a father-of-two from South Shields, will need to learn how to walk and talk again after the savage attack on Mile End Road on August 8 last year.

Five months on, the 30-year-old is still recovering in the Sunderland Royal Hospital, and as her son battles to return to a normal life his brave mother, Susan Douglas, has spoken of her agony.

"His friend saved his life and we're so grateful for that."

Calvin had part of his skull removed and suffered brain damage as a result of the attack. He has undergone three operations since, and at one point mum Susan received a call from experts saying it would be '50/50' whether he would survive.

Now stable, Calvin has started breathing on his own in the last week as he begins the long and painful road to recovery.

And mum Susan says the attack on the "baby of the family" has had a life-changing impact on everyone.

The 58-year-old added: "Our whole life has been put on hold since August.

"If I don't see Calvin every day or he doesn't hear my voice, I fear his health is going to get worse.

"I'm just so scared he does not know who I am when he wakes. It could be years before he comes home.

"I just miss Calvin so much, my heart is broken. …
