Impressive Fabio Wins the Plaudits

SUPER goal scorer Stewart Downing may have dominated the headlines, but Middlesbrough's Brazilian defender Fabio da Silva also received a congratulating slap on the back for an impressive performance in the FA Cup win over Accrington.

Downing's sizzling second half strike settled the issue against the League Two side, earning Boro a place in the fifth round of the competition.

But the former England winger wasn't the only Boro player to impress in Boro's 1-0 victory, as fullback Fabio caught the eye of BBC Radio Tees colour commentator Neil Maddison.

Former Manchester United defender Fabio had to show patience to begin with while trying to force his way into the Boro line-up following his summer move from Cardiff City to Teesside.

The South American star has grown into a starting role however, with the Accrington clash his 14th appearance of the season.

And Maddison liked what he saw from Fabio against Accrington as he produced a committed display against the spirited League Two team, who gave it their best shot at the Riverside.

"For me he (Fabio) typified everything you want from a player in a game," Maddison said.

Neil Maddison "Show aggression, show that determination to get forward and defend as well and he showed that.

"He was tenacious in the tackle and his fitness levels have improved so much as time has gone on. He has been consistent all the way through the season for me."

January signings Rudy Gestede and Patrick Bamford both missed chances to make the scoreline more emphatic. …
