Thanks to You, We Can Tackle Homelessness

IT IS remarkable that our charity appeal to help young homeless people has raised more than PS3million. That is thanks in large part to the extraordinary generosity of readers, conscious perhaps that homelessness is not a status limited to a particular type of person. Rather, it is the bottom of a spiral into which almost anyone can fall for a whole host of reasons. Homelessness, indeed, is often closer to home than we might like to think.

Last night the Standard co-hosted with the National Theatre a debate to consider ways homelessness can be tackled not only by helping those who find themselves without a roof over their head but also through prevention strategies. As every relevant agency acknowledges, once somebody is on the streets, it is hard to help them get back on track. The key is to offer early intervention to those who are sliding towards homelessness, especially young people who often don't know where to turn.

This is why the bulk of the money raised by our campaign will go towards the establishment of the firstever national helpline for people aged 16 to 25 who are either already homeless or, crucially, at risk of becoming so. …
