IN September 2015, Seaton Burn College, the smallest 11-18 high school in North Tyneside, failed its Ofsted report, despite having the seventh best A-level results in the region.

A College Improvement Plan was drawn up by the senior management team and governors. With much support from the council's Schools Improvement team and several outstanding high schools in the borough, by June 2016 Ofsted were very pleased with the progress that had been made.

However, so determined is the Government to take services and assets (at SBC the school building, large playing fields and a five-acre nature reserve built with public money) away from local councils that the Government-appointed regional schools commissioner (RSC) has removed the college from the council's control.

An interim executive board representing four multi-academy trusts has been appointed to oversee the college and the principal of Gosforth Academy in Newcastle has been installed as executive head teacher. …
