Vallily Delighted at Joining New Stable

Article excerpt

SIMON Vallily is convinced he will make significant strides towards a British cruiserweight title shot in 2017 after penning his new management contract, a three-year deal with the MTK Marbella stable.

The Middlesbrough fighter is the latest in a long line of recent signings by the Puerto Banus-based team, including Irish amateur standout Mick Conlan, who will make his pro debut at Madison Square Garden on St Patrick's Day.

Vallily is still training with his former manager Michael Marsden in Rothwell near Leeds and will have his first fight bout under the wing of MTK - formerly known as Team MGM - at Rainton Meadows Arena on March 4. It's exciting times for the former Commonwealth Games gold medallist with a new deal and series of fight dates laid out in front of him, and for Teesside's professional boxing scene as a whole at the moment. Giant Easterside heavyweight John Burton will make his pro debut when he joins Vallily on the Rainton show.

And Guisborough's Josh Leather will fight for his first professional title when he takes on Dublin's Phillip Sutcliffe Jnr in Leeds on May 13 for the vacant IBF Inter-Continental super lightweight strap.

That First Direct Arena bill will be shown live on BT Sport and BoxNation and also features Leather's twin brother Kalam and the pro debut of their Imran Naeem-trained stablemate, Thornaby's former amateur star Joe Maphosa.

"MTK are making a lot of new signings at the moment and their boxers are getting brilliant opportunities and being brought along correctly," Vallily said.

"There's not many better teams around as far as I'm concerned, and I think joining them is the best move for my future.

"They've given me three dates for this year and each one will be a step up and towards the British title."

Vallily will try to get a bounceback victory under his belt on Phil Jeffries' March show in Houghtonle-Spring after suffering the first defeat on his 10-fight pro ledger last time out. …
