New Owner Takes over Landmark Pub

A LANDMARK North East pub is set to serve its last pint as a Wetherspoons this week.

It is understood that the popular Union Rooms venue on Westgate Road, Newcastle will close for a few weeks from Sunday while the new owners move in.

We revealed last month that the pub had been bought by Durham businessman Andrew Ward, who already runs a number of ventures including several pubs.

He has snapped up the Grade IIlisted Union Rooms and says he has bought the building as a going concern, for an undisclosed sum.

Full details of his plans for the building, bought through his newly launched company Union Rooms Newcastle Management Ltd, have yet to emerge, but a refurbishment programme is believed to be on the cards at some point.

But, having bought it as a going concern, every effort is being made to make sure trade is continuous and that the pumps stay on for customers after JD Wetherspoon officially hands over the building. He said: "We want to build on the success that it already has. …
