Police: Apparent Pipe Bomb Discovered; It Was Found at Business on West Beaver and Police 'Mitigate' Device

Article excerpt

Police are investigating what appears to be a pipe bomb after it was discovered early Tuesday at a business on West Beaver Street, less than a mile from Interstate 95, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Officers were called to West Rock Recyclers at 1580 W. Beaver St. just before 8:45 a.m. after the device was found on the property, occupied by a big tin-roofed main facility, parked trailers and stacks of recycled paper. An employee had discovered the device mixed in with recycling materials and alerted management, the Sheriff's Office said.

It was unknown how the device ended up at the business or when. But employees were evacuated as the Sheriff's Office bomb squad was brought in to "mitigate the device," police said.

The FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms also is investigating, according to federal officials.

Police also blocked off part of Acorn Street at West Rock's entrance during the investigation. The business is adjacent to a massive railroad yard whose rails go under the West Beaver Street overpass.

"He got a new hoodie for Christmas. You know, he likes to wear it," she said.

He told his mother the employee leaned over to whisper into his ear, using foul language, threatening that if he wore the hoodie again there would be repercussions. …
