Defence Chief: US Not Stealing Iraqi Oil

US defence secretary James Mattis today promised that America was not seeking to seize Iraqi oil, as coalition forces launched new attacks on Islamic State militants south of Mosul.

Iraqi troops backed by US and British special forces and aircraft targeted a hill south of Mosul airport as they sought to advance on the western half of the city, which has been under IS control since June 2014.

Mr Mattis, who flew into Baghdad today, was seeking to defuse a row sparked by Donald Trump's suggestion that America's intervention in Iraq was partly motivated by a desire to gain control of its oilfields.

The US president's inclusion of Iraq in his travel ban on seven largely Muslim countries has also led some Iraqi politicians to urge Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to reduce cooperation with Washington. Mr Trump raised the issue of Iraqi oil during his presidential campaign and mentioned it again last month during a visit to the CIA. …
