Katarina Is Ready to Jump to It at European Indoors

KATARINA JOHNSON-THOMPSON will spearhead the British team for the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Belgrade next month.

The 24-year-old, who missed last weekend's Birmingham Indoor Grand Prix with a hamstring injury, had hinted she might not take up her place in the long jump for the event from to March 3-5, with the indoors only a secondary ambition for her in 2017.

But Johnson-Thompson, who has been training in France in the build-up with a new coaching team, today was named in the 31-strong team. Ranked eighth in the world this year with a best of 6.69m in her sole competition, she will have hopes of adding to the silver medal she won in the event at the World Indoors in Sopot in 2014.

There will also be medal ambitions in the long jump for Lorraine Ugen, who beat Johnson-Thompson to the British indoors title, and Jazmin Sawyers, who has had to fit training around appearing on The Voice. …
