Sanjay Pugal, tax manager at Tait Walker What is the best thing about your job? Generally there is a notion that a career in tax is fairly mundane, however, I can honestly say the best thing about my job is that the complex world of tax is ever-changing and that makes my work an everevolving process.

Although I primarily act as a tax advisor to SMEs across the North East on both tax advisory and compliance matters, the Partner Group at Tait Walker has also allowed me to become the firm's Capital Allowances lead.

As such, I have been given the responsibility to lead my own subteam of trainee capital allowance specialists in a bid to create an outstanding service offering in the region.

What is your proudest achievement? I think my proudest achievement was securing my initial tax internship at a top North East accountancy firm during the height of the recession.

As part of my degree programme, we were tasked with securing yearlong industrial placements and at the time the majority of finance firms nationally were in the process of a recruitment freeze.

What advice would you give to someone starting in your career? I think the best piece of advice I was given is that if you really want to get involved with a specific client or a specific area of tax, then just put your hand up and ask to do so.

The majority of time people will be more than willing to get some added resource on their work, as it allows them to venture into areas they never had the time to do so previously.

What's the best piece of advice you've been given? Same as above really Which individual has inspired you most and why? I'd probably have to go with Lakshmi Mittal for this one - the founder and CEO of Mittal Steel.

After many years of watching his father toil away in a steel works located in Kolkata, India, Lakshmi, who excelled as trainee accountant from a very early age, set out on his own and founded a steel works, which today is a multi-billion pound global empire. …
