THE REFEREE SUNDERLAND'S game against Manchester City at the Stadium of Light on Sunday will be refereed by Martin Atkinson.

It will be the fourth time this season the West Yorkshire-based has taken charge of the Black Cats, and David Moyes' side has not picked up a single point in those three previous outings.

Atkinson last refereed the Black Cats on Boxing Day when they lost 3-1 against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

And prior to that he awarded Sunderland a penalty - which was converted by Jermain Defoe - in their 4-1 defeat at the hands of Arsenal at the Stadium of Light in late October, and way also the man in the middle for the 2-1 defeat against relegation rivals Middlesbrough on Wearside in August.

He has refereed Pep Guardiola's Man City only once this season, and that game came just before Christmas when City recovered after conceding an early goal to beat Arsenal 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium.

So far this season, Atkinson has shown 67 yellow cards and two reds in 19 Premier League games. …
