THE creative team that will deliver the Great Exhibition of the North has been announced, with Maria Bota recruited as creative producer.

The job, advertised in November with a salary in the range PS65,000 to PS75,000, called for someone to develop and implement an innovative programme of new artistic and creative commissions.

Ms Bota, who has previously been director of the Ageas Salisbury International Arts Festival and creative producer of the Milton Keynes International Festival, is joined in the creative team by two familiar North East figures. Carol Bell, director of culture and major events at destination marketing agency Newcastle-Gateshead Initiative (NGI), has been appointed executive director of the Great Exhibition and Sarah Munro, director of Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, is to be creative spokesperson.

It was announced in October that NewcastleGateshead was to host the Great Exhibition of the North after a competition between rival cities.

It will take place over 10 weeks in 2018, opening on June 22, with a brief to celebrate innovation and creativity across the North of England.

Ms Bota said: "In recent years my work has concentrated on creative visioning, commissioning, programming and producing across all art forms, indoors, outdoors and online.

"I believe culture can transform people and places, producing inspiring experiences that resonate for life."

Expressing her excitement at being appointed creative producer, she said the Great Exhibition of the North was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the many creative assets of the North and also to inspire future generations.

NGI, lead partner for delivering the Great Exhibition, said Ms Bota brought a wealth of experience and a unique mix of skills and expertise to the role.

She will be responsible for the opening and closing celebrations and bringing together the major exhibition sites to feature along three key walking routes around NewcastleGateshead.
