A SPEEDING danger driver who smashed this huge hole in a pensioner's bungalow has walked free from court.

Banned road menace Shane Henderson had consumed alcohol and was doing 52mph in a 30 zone when he careered out of control.

The Vauxhall Vectra flipped into the air and crashed into the victim's home in Dudley, North Tyneside, breaking his vital oxygen equipment and leaving him in hospital for a week.

A court heard PS80,000 of damage was done to the council home and the man who lived there had no contents insurance to cover his belongings.

Former mechanic Henderson, who has a string of previous driving convictions, had to be pulled from the wreckage, along with his teenage passenger, by neighbours and the car ended up on its roof.

A judge said the 29-year-old could easily have killed or maimed the pensioner and "richly deserves to go to custody" - but said he would suspend the sentence as jail would undo the progress he has made and because he has already served time on remand.

Judge Robert Adams told him: "You crashed your vehicle into the home of a retired man, dependent on oxygen.

"His oxygen machine was damaged as a result and he had to be detained in hospital for a week. His oxygen levels in his system were low.

"He had no contents insurance for his home and as a result of various fibres and glass fragments he has suffered significant loss.

"The council who owned the property are facing a bill of PS80,000 as a result of the damage.

There was damage to and you have killed injured this own Judge Robert "You richly deserve to go to custody.

"There was enormous damage to property and you could easily have killed or seriously injured this man in his own home."
