Fletcher Staying Positive despite Eagles' Struggles; BASKETBALL

IT may be two games dropped on the road in less than a week for Esh Group Eagles Newcastle and a tough fixture ahead tonight at Northumbria University Sport Central, but influential point guard Rahmon Fletcher is still upbeat.

He said: "To be honest I thought we played pretty well at times even though we lost against London.

"It was a step up from the Worcester game and from top to bottom we all did pretty good.

"We just went through a stretch when we couldn't hit shots we'd normally hit.

"It's a building process right now I guess. We've had a lot of stuff individually going on off the court both personally and with injuries and that makes it hard to keep a rhythm which is important to our style.

"Even now we're still learning about each other and still coming to terms with our system.

"With all that to still be in second place and having won a cup we're not in as bad a shape as it looks but when you're the Eagles I guess nowhere but first is good enough.

"I think one of the frustrating things from the outside looking in is how we can have gone from doing so well early season and winning the cup final to what we're going through now, but honestly that's how basketball is.

"Quite often teams have their droughts at the beginning or in the middle, it's just the fact ours has come at the end of the season which probably makes people notice it more."

Listening to Fletcher it is easy to see he's more disappointed and frustrated than being low on confidence.

He firmly believes in his teammates and the system and that they can turn things around.

He added: "People might think it's easy to say but we have to start preparing for the play-offs and that preparation begins now because when you get there the play-offs is a whole new season and everyone starts with a fresh mentality. …
