Mumbai May Be Madness but It's Also Quite Magical

I HAVE a business trip coming up to Mumbai during which I will have some spare time. I wonder what you would recommend to see in the city itself, and whether I should try to head up to Delhi too? Chris B I RATE Mumbai as easily the most appealing city in India -- it's also the largest. Mumbai occupies a peninsula that jabs into the ocean, with the Gateway of India near the southern tip on the waterfront in Colaba. It's full of colonial remnants and teeming markets, and offers the nightly delight of sunset on the arc of Chowpatty Beach.

There is plenty to keep you occupied within the city. You could also take the short boat trip from the jetty at the Gateway to the temples of Elephanta Island, or make a break from Mumbai to an inland hill station such as Khandala, about 50 miles south-east of the city.

Delhi is worth considering if you are able to arrange an open-jaw itinerary (out to Mumbai, back from Delhi, on Air India or British Airways). …
