Five Hurt after Car Overturns on Road

A 10-year-old was among five people injured after a car overturned near to the Redheugh Bridge in Gateshead.

Four adults were taken to hospital along with the child following the serious incident on the A184 heading into the city last night.

Pictures show the hatchback on its roof after crashing through a barrier.

The bridge was closed to motorists for more than three-and-a-half hours while police cleared the scene and carried out investigations.

Queueing northbound traffic stretched back towards the A1 while in central Newcastle buses and drivers faced diversions.

Police and fire crews were called along with five ambulances, a Hazardous Area Response Team, a trauma paramedic, a cardiac arrest paramedic and a support unit from the Great North Air Ambulance.

A North East Ambulance Service spokeswoman confirmed all patients were transferred to hospital in a road ambulance and the air ambulance was not needed.
