NEWCASTLE United will record the highest average second-tier attendance for 67 years in a season where the crowds have flocked back to St James' Park.

In a resounding show of support for the Rafa Benitez-inspired 'Rafalution', United are on course to record their sixth highest average gate of ALL TIME this season.

United's current average crowd is 51,032 - but that will improve with two of their final three home games already sold out, beginning with the visit of Leeds tonight.

That means they are bettered only by their own crowd in 1947-8 and Tottenham in terms of second-tier support levels.

Newcastle were roared on by 56,283 in 1948 and Spurs were backed by 54,111 in the 1949-50 season - but United's support levels in the second tier are unprecedented in the more modern, all-seater stadia era.

Some huge clubs have played in the second division since the Second World War, including Manchester United, Liverpool and Everton.

Yet United are only the second club in the history of the division to record an average crowd of more than 50,000. …
