The Nation Rallies to Lend Hand to Victims; Extra Hands Heading North

THE nation is rallying to lend a hand to Cyclone Debbie victims as more than 200 military personnel sailed for north Queensland last night to team up with troops from Townsville, police and emergency service workers, and volunteers.

Thousands of relief workers are now helping to clean up nearly 300 kilometres of Queensland coast impacted by the storm which ripped through northern communities on Tuesday. While regional Queensland is warmly welcoming the extra hands, many residents, especially those on farms, are taking responsibility for their own repairs as privately owned tractors, graders and front end loaders are fired up to clear away debris and repair damage.

Townsville-based Army Brigadier Christopher Field has taken control of the military response while Naval Commanding Officer David Graham is overseeing nearly 200 military personnel on board HMAS Choules which left Brisbane last night to sail into the storm impact zone. …
