Missing Link; Geof Visited Israel to Learn of Where His Parents Met

GEOF ACTON'S eyes welled with tears as he sat in the same spot in Israel his mother Rona had 71 years earlier.

He held with him just a single photo of her seated on a rock in front of water and a cliff face, an image his father shot while on their honeymoon in 1946.

The trip was a bucket list venture for Mr Acton, who was hoping to check two items from his list before returning home - to visit where his parents had fallen in love and to make a pilgrimage to Israel and walk where Jesus walked.

"There were really two stories in going, for me, and it happened at just the right time in my life," he said.

"There was this wonderful, amazing, unbelievable Christian component to my trip, because here I got to go to the place where Jesus Christ walked, lived and died and it was just remarkable to see.

"Wherever you go, something happened, something which changed the life of every Christina on the planet. It was something I've always wanted to do and suddenly the stars just aligned to allow it."

Mr Acton, who was invited on the pilgrimage by members of his local Catholic church (St Joseph's, North Mackay), said he knew it was meant to be and would allow him to finally learn where his parents had met, wed and loved.

Leslie Acton (Geof's father) was 20 years old when he chose to join the British Palestinian Police Force, he had previously worked as a carpenter from the age of 14.

His mother, Rona, worked as a teleprinter operator and was put on a ship as part of a convoy that was heading to the invasion of Italy in 1943.

"The ship went to Haifa in Palestine, now Israel, and somewhere along the line she (Rona) met my father and fell in love, became engaged and got married in Jaffa," he said.

"It was almost as if it was all intended to work out like this, so I chose to join the group and finally experience both these wonderful parts of my life. …
