IN sci-fi, there are hits and there are misses. For every great movie like District 9 or Edge of Tomorrow, there's a dud like Jupiter Ascending.

And then there's Ghost in the Shell, which falls somewhere in the middle.

In a future where humans are augmented with cybernetics, Hanaka Robotics develops a project to create a completely artificial body capable of housing a human brain.

A seriously injured young woman named Mira Killian is chosen as a test subject and, with a powerful new body, is trained to work as a counter-terrorism operative.

One year later, "Major" Killian (Scarlett Johansson) is part of Section 9, a government team tracking down a murderous hacker.

Ghost in the Shell is based on a Japanese manga, and the film maintains this influence, set in a neon, futuristic city that, if not in Japan, seems to be somewhere in Asia. …
