MORE often than not, when we hear from the Fair Work Ombudsman it's because someone has been up to no good in the workplace.

Today though, call it a pre-emptive strike - Fair Work Ombudsman Natalie James is on a mission to educate employees and business about the myths that are contributing to a concerning number of young Australian workers being underpaid.

Ms James said an unfortunate number of people are misinformed as to what are and are not lawful workplace practices.

"It's time to address the myths that have achieved widespread levels of acceptance and are resulting in employers short-changing young workers around the country," Ms James said.

"Young workers make up about 16% of the Australian workforce, but account for a disproportionately high 25% of requests for assistance to the agency. Last year, 44% of the litigations we filed in court involved young workers."
