Johnson and Pickup Take Home Title Burnett Cup Winners Celebrate after Big Win

Article excerpt

WHAT a fantastic wrap up of this year's DGZ Burnett Cup.

Peter Johnson and Dean Pickup of Bargara Golf Club defeated Andrew Portelli and John Muller of Bundaberg Golf Club 2 up.

Peter and Dean have been playing in this competition for the last six years and have finally won the major prize.

This was expected to be a very close match with all players having reasonably low handicaps and the players did not disappoint.

Peter and Dean got off to a near perfect start being four up after seven holes.

Although behind for most of the match, Andrew and John fought hard to keep in touch.

After nine holes Peter and Dean were three up.

From the tenth on it was a real see-saw with one team winning a hole and then on the next the other.

With a win on 15 Andrew and John got the score back to two down with three to play.

Slightly off line approaches from Dean and Peter allowed John to grab another win for the Bundy team to go to the 17th only one down.

Andrew's tee shot found the middle of the green on the long 181m par 3 about 6m from the pin, while the other three missed.

With a great shot Dean put his second to about 2m from the pin.

John and Peter finished with fours.

Andrew had a chance to square the match, however his birdie putt missed by centimetres.

Both Andrew and Dean got their pars so the match went to the par 5, 18th with the Bargara pair one up.

By this time there was a good crowd following the match and a quick phone call to the club house saw an even larger crown watch the match approach the 18th green.

Andrew and John both put their drives down the middle and past the corner.

Peter stood up to the tee, and for the first time today sent a terrible slice out-of-bounds.

Dean must have felt a bit of pressure because also for the first time in the match, had a shocker of a tee shot.

We have all done it, but he totally "duffed" his tee shot, hitting it on the "head" but luckily it went bouncing straight down the middle to past the drain and onto the fairway just far enough to have a shot toward the green. …
