A CHANGE is on the way, which should bring some relief in terms of cooler temperatures and a change in wind direction but it will also bring the chance of showers with a windy weekend across our local beaches.

Today will be another stinker with W/NW to N/NE winds at about 10 to 15 knots throughout the day, but there is also the high chance of showers and overcast conditions together with a thunderstorm this afternoon.

Tomorrow the SE wind change should move into our local area. It will bring with it the chance of a thunderstorm through the early morning ahead of the change and then deliver S/SE to E/SE winds that will gust to 20 to 25 knots through the afternoon.

On Sunday more of these strong winds will arrive with 20 to 25 knots of E/SE winds throughout the day, along with the chance of scattered showers about the coast.


SWIMMING conditions will be good throughout today as the NE winds persist but start to ease in strength. As is usual with the northerly winds, beaches such as Kellys Beach and Elliott Heads will be your picks today.

Early tomorrow morning will be another option for swimmers at all beaches while the tide is high and the winds hopefully still quite light, but this will change quickly through the morning as the strong SE wind change arrives in our area.

From tomorrow afternoon onwards, we can expect 20 to 25 knots of SE to E/SE winds across all our local beaches. This will cause choppy and messy conditions to develop, along with a strong side sweep running from right to left along most beaches. These conditions will be worse on the open and exposed beaches.

Once these strong winds arrive, swimmers will need to look for sheltered locations for a swim. Beaches such as Hervey Bay, the southern pocket of Agnes Water, as well as Moore Park and Nielson Park may provide the best options. …
