CQ Boys Answer Williams' Call Home

RUGBY LEAGUE: Ever since he began his tenure at the CQ Capras, coach Kim Williams has made it his mission to unite the region.

While based at the might of Browne Park, he stresses the club is not solely Rockhampton, but a collective effort of area spanning seven shires and some 117,813sq km.

Bringing the troops home under one banner has been crucial to his overall master plan.

His side enjoyed early on-field success last season before fading away, but the signs of real progress were ever-present and with players understanding what it means to be a Capra, the club is poised for its best year to date.

"I think it is extremely important that those players take pride in where they come from and in the jersey," Williams said.

"There is no doubt that it has been questioned in recent years but we know ourselves that the guys here now have it.

"It's just as important that we represent the whole of the district. We aren't the Rockhampton Capras... when you go through our list we have a wide representation - Emerald, Blackwater, Yeppoon, Maryborough and everywhere in between.

"I think it would be good for our community to know that we are proud of our roots and that we are striving to do the best we can."

Williams' extensive scouting and inter-club relationships have seen two Central Queensland talents come home and a host of local league stars signed on.

"We have deliberately targeted to get some of the local guys back, some of them who have ventured out to pursue their rugby league dreams. Jack Madden and Sam Smith come to mind," the coach said.

"Jack had six years in Sydney and Sam, who played here in 2015, went to the Broncos' Under-20s. But they know what it is to represent CQ.

"We obviously hope 2017 is our best season to date and on the back of that, we hope the locals can really get behind us. …
