ADELAIDE United defender Dylan McGowan says the players must step up if the club is to escape from the bottom of the A-League.

The defending champion Reds have six points from 12 games and have won only once in defence of their title.

Pressure is mounting on coach Guillermo Amor after a 4-0 loss to ladder-leading Sydney FC at Coopers Stadium on Boxing Day, but McGowan insists it is time for the players to shoulder some of the burden after their poor run of results.

"I think we can improve on defence, midfield and attack," the 25-year-old said.

"I think all of those aspects really need to go up a notch if we are going to start turning things around.

"We think we are a better team, but the table doesn't lie.

"We are there for a reason and I think with our performances recently we have shown why we are at the bottom. …
