A HANDFUL of Far North Coast surfers have been nominated for Australian Surfing awards at a dinner in Newcastle this weekend.

Byron Bay surfers Mark Stewart "Mono" Stewart and Matt Wilkinson are up for male surfer of the year along with three time world champion Mick Fanning.

Stewart won back-to-back titles at the ISA Stance World Adaptive Championships in the United States two months ago.

He grew up at Mullumbimby and lost his right leg to cancer when he was 16 years old.

Wilkinson had the best year of his career cracking the professional tour and winning the Quiksilver Pro on the Gold Coast and the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach, Victoria.

He finished the season fifth overall and was the second highest money earner behind 2016 world champion John John Florence.

Elsewhere, former Lennox Head surfer Tyler Wright has been nominated and should take out the female surfer of the year award.

It was a dream season for Wright winning her first world title on the professional tour. …
