QUEENSLAND bowler Jake Rynne is only 13 years old but has already been bowling for almost half his life.

The 13-year-old is believed to be the youngest bowler to play in the Summerland Singles during its 58-year history at the Ballina Bowling Club.

The Dalby product who now represents North Toowoomba was one of 32 bowlers who took part in the first day of competition yesterday.

"My grandpa introduced me to the game when I was five or six and I've been playing ever since," Jake said. "It's probably not typical for someone my age to be playing lawn bowls but I've made mates from it who are around my age.

"If more kids gave it a go I'm sure they would really enjoy it and there would be more of us out here."

There was plenty of local talent in the mix yesterday with the likes of Neil Burgess, Luke Jones and Peter Taylor competing

Some of the best bowlers from Queensland were also there with Kurt Brown and Scott DeJongh on the greens. …
