IT'S hard to say what was more pleasing about Saturday night's trial between the Brisbane Broncos and Ipswich Jets.

On the field there were great signs from the Jets, who looked sharp and switched on from the get go. The benefit of keeping the majority of last year's playing group will certainly have a big effect on Ipswich's chances of returning to finals football in 2017.

Off the field, the attendance at North Ipswich Reserve was impressive. A chance to see the Brisbane Broncos, albeit a side missing many of their stars, was always going to attract a large audience in Ipswich.

But with temperatures soaring, and a live stream of the game available for those at home, it was heartening to see so many families come out and support both clubs.

With the games split into quarters, the oval was overrun by children at each whistle, all practising their Benji Marshall flick passes.

Of the Broncos marquee signing there was only a brief appearance due to injury, but the fans took every opportunity to take some photos with the former West Tigers and St George star playmaker.

Ipswich Jets CEO Jason Cubit was delighted by the turnout which saw more than 4,000 spectators turned up for Saturday's trial matches, with a further 700 watching along from home.

"It's exactly what we hoped it would be," Cubit said. "We made it free entry for kids and that added to the flavour of it being a family day out.

"I think the Broncos were surprised just how close it was and the way the players interacted with the crowd was great to see. That's how we put it out there, that this was a chance to see the guys up close and personal.

"We've got a trial this weekend against the Easts Tigers at Laidley. It's part of our supporting the local affliated clubs in the area and I think they are making a big day of it with a live bands and some activities for the kids too. …
