BATTING for the Brisbane Heat in the women's Big Bash last summer, Ashleigh Barty manage to reach double figures in only two matches.

But in just two matches at the Australian Open this week the 2011 junior Wimbledon champion has reminded everybody she still intends to be a formidable force on the tennis court.

"I was batting at number seven or eight, so I think that says enough," Barty said of her cricket ability.

During a voluntary sabbatical from tennis announced in September 2014, Barty scored 68 runs in seven WBBL innings - the last of which was on January 16 last year.

By that stage, Barty knew her heart still lay with tennis.

But having played her first professional match as a 13- year-old in 2010, the 20-year- old admits her break from the sport could so easily have become permanent.

In 2013, Barty and Casey Dellacqua made the doubles final at Melbourne Park, Wimbledon and the US Open, and in singles she was knocking on the door of the top 100. …
