IT'S THAT time of year again when anglers are heading out for a fish, setting the crab pots and throwing the cast nets in the hopes of a seafood Christmas dinner.

Even those northerly winds haven't been enough to keep our fishos from hitting the water.

There are plenty of mud crabs throughout the Sandy Straits including the estuary system of Fraser Island.

However there are a couple of empty ones among them. These are best returned back to the water as they are not good eating.

Elbow-slapper whiting up to half a kilo are also in numbers on the sand flats, with yabbies and worms being the preferred bait.

But if you want to get the blood pumping, using 40-50 mm surface poppers or walks have had fantastic results in the shallows.

Super hot days have triggered the mangrove jack to come on the bite, taking live baits, mullet strips or medium diving lures.

The most popular spots for chasing them have been Kauri, Butha and Poona Creeks and the estuary system of the Sandy Straits. …
